Bukky Ajayi was born a Christian but She converted to Islam in the early eighties and she was named Zainab.
She studied in England. She was abroad for 6 years, as a Federal government scholar, and She left England and came back to Nigeria after her education in 1965 and joined the services of Nigeria Television Authority(NTA) as a presentation assistant in 1966,
She later rose to become a presenter and then a news reader. She presented a couple of children’s programmes and ‘Nigerian’s Sketches,’ a programme which showcased the Nigerian culture.
Bukky Ajayi was later transferred to Port Harcourt and later back to Lagos, and it was at that time she started her acting career.
She started with the ‘Village Headmaster’ in the 70’s, and she later got a role in Amaka Igwe’s ‘Checkmate.’ She played roles in several movies which include Critical Assignment, Mother of George, Indecent Girl, Diamond Ring, Witches, Thunderbolt and a host of others.
She died yesterday at 82 years.
Many Nollywood actors and actress attended her burial at Atan cemetery yesterday. Patrick Doyle said ”She was a very dedicated Muslim and I’m sure that she will be smiling where she is now that she died on Sallah day,” said Patrick Doyle.
“That much I can assure you.
”Though not a lot of people were aware of it, Bukky Ajayi was a devout Muslim and before her death requested that she be buried according to Islamic rites, particularly by NASFAT, which she was an active member of the Public Relations Committee.” He said.
