Ogun 2019: Yewa-Awori Versus Ijebu-Remo, and the major Players

In every political race, there is bound to be political calculations and strategies towards achieving it from several players at different political camps. Ogun State with 3 Senatorial districts, Central, East and West has 4 Zones which are Remo, Egba, Ijebu and Yewa/Awori.

The race to Oke-mosan would be an interesting one, as different players have started the game very early. Senator Ibikunle Amosun's successor may either come from Ijebu-Remo or Yewa-Awori axis by calculation. Since the political dispensation in Nigeria, Yewa-Aworis have not gotten the opportunity to paddle the canoe of the state. It is not that Yewas did not try or attempt to man the position of governorship but some factors used to alter their political games.

Late Olabisi Onabanjo was the first civilian governor from Ijebu axis. He presided over the affairs of the state for 4 years (1979-1983). If not for Military intervention, he would have completed his second term in office. Otunba Gbenga Daniel from Remo axis, was in government for 8 years (2003-2011). Aremo Olusegun Osoba from Egba zone was twice governor of the state. First, 1991-1992 and 1999-2003. It is also expected that the present governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun will complete his two terms in office by 2019.

In 2003, when Aremo Osoba contested for second term in office but lost to Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Osoba's aim was to use Engr. Wale Bajomo as his successor from Ayetoro but he died as a result of serious sickness. Dele Arojo was another top contender from Yewa that most people thought would man the governorship job but he was assassinated by unknown assailants.

The accord between Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun gave OGD victory over Osoba in 2003.

In 2007, the only candidate that Yewa-Awori had from PDP was Dr. Lekan Ojo who was ex-police officer. Ojo was Ogun State PDP chairman who was removed as the party Chairman as a result of his closeness to the then Ogun Central Senator now Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun. Lekan Ojo of the blessed memory actually started Yewa Lokan Agenda (Turn of Yewa as Governor) with his billboards across the state. His aim was to challenge Gbenga Daniel. He could not win PDP governorship primary as Daniel had upper-hand being the incumbent.

In 2011, Yewa-Aworis had two strong candidates in two main dominated political parties of the state, ex- Ekiti State Military Administrator, Gen. Adetunji Olurin Rtd. was People's Democratic Party's candidate while Gboyega Nosiru Isiaka was that of People's Party of Nigeria. Ibikunle Amosun was only candidate from Egba, ipso facto he eventually won the governorship race.

In 2015, history also repeated itself as two governorship candidates emerged from Yewa. Senator Akin Kamal Odunsi from Social Democratic Party and Gboyega Nosiru Isiaka from People's Democratic Party. Amosun of All Progressives Congress won again.

As 2019 approaches, the game has actually started in the domain of All Progressives Congress and also from opposition parties. The political realignment and strategies have been on. Ijebus are saying it is their turn because Gbenga Daniel who spent two terms in office represented Remos. Some Politicians are planning to use Ijebu agenda while Yewa Awori believed they deserved the governorship slot than Ijebus.

The House of Representatives member representing Remo Federal Constituency, Hon. Ladi Adebutu was reportedly eyeing the race when he launched his empowerment in Odogbolu where it is outside his constituency.

Senator representing Lagos West, Olamilekan Solomon popularly called Yayi is also eyeing the Oke Mosan seat. Former Minister of Education, Senator Iyabo Anisulowo who also hailed from Yewa South where Senator Adeola came from is as well nursing the gubernatorial ambition towards 2019. Some pundits opined that Senator Buruji Kashamu's governorship ambition was the reason the Ijebu Igbo politician had to separate Gboyega Isiaka from his political family.  Picture : Senator Adeola, Prince Gboyega Isiaka, Salisu Omoyayi, Dr. Abiodun..

Other governorship contenders include; A philanthropist from Ikenne, Arch.  Owodunni Opayemi, Rotimi Paseda from Ijebu of Unity Party of Nigeria, Senator Gbolahan Dada representing Ogun west, Hon. Kayode Oladele representing Imeko/Yewa north federal constituency, House of Representatives member representing Yewa South/Ipokia federal constituency, Hon. Abd. Kabir Adekunle Akinlade, Former Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Amosun, Salisu Omoyayi from Egba

I believe is to early to determine where the spindle will swing towards, many are jesters, many just which their names re-ignited into political atmosphere while few among the names above are making serious efforts only to get Senates, Reps and probably appointments slot. I see many more serious minded people coming out soon.
