Confusion as Ogun prepares to conduct Local government election

Confusion imbues politicians in Ogun State as there is no direction and information yet on when the Local government election would be conducted. At the expiration of three year tenure of the last elected Council Chairmen and Councillors in July last year, Governor Ibikunle Amosun told the APC leaders at MTR hall Presidential Lodge that the transition Committee of the 20 Local government areas set up would only spend three months in Office, and after the tenure expiration, there would be an election. It was also reported that Governor Amosun also announced that there would be election in the 20 Local government areas and Local councils Development areas (LCDAs) that would be created. A top official with the State government confided in us that it would be very easy to conduct election into LCDAs which Aremo Olusegun Osoba had already created during his tenure rather than going into extensive and another tedious task of creating new LCDAs again. He also said Governor Amosun only wanted to add another four new LCDAs into those ones already created by Osoba since Ogun State now has more population and cities.

Consequently, One of the Commissioners of Ogun State Independent electoral Commission (OGSIEC), Barr. Mutiu Agboke recently announced on his Facebook page that the commission is already prepared to conduct the Local government election soon. By and large, Governor Amosun had renewed the three month appointment of transition committee twice now. While some politicians believed that Governor Amosun would extend their tenure for one year, thereby means election would hold in June, some said the election would hold before then. The opposition members from People Democratic Party, Labour party, Social Democratic Party and others are also studying the scenario. They believed APC led government must announce the notice of election date, three months before election, but some politicians opined that the three months issue doesn't concern OGSIEC once the Local government election law is amended.

Ipso facto, aspirants for the post of councillorship and Chairmanship have started their campaigns in the earnest with posters, handbills, computer graphics design on social media. They have commenced consultations and lobbyings in their various wards and their local government areas.

Apparently, Some communities have started the renovation of the Secretariat buildings they are going to use for administrative onuses of their Local Council development areas, if announced anytime. A visit to Imala, Ado odo and other areas revealed community leaders have prepared for the announcement of the Local Council development areas with the renovation of the proposed secretariat.
