Man commits suicide over unpaid salary arrears

Tragedy struck at Gbegenu, a community, near Kpakungu, in Chanchaga Local
Government of Niger State, as a middle aged man committed suicide over non-
payment of his seven months salary arrears.

The man said to be working for a popular foreign construction firm, allegedly killed
himself after his pleas for his employer to pay his salaries failed.

Before the sad incident occured on Friday, the deceased fondly called Baba Peter, by
his friends and relations, was said to have started withdrawing from people.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Niger State Police Command, ASP Elkanah
Bala confirmed the incident.
In an interview with Nigerian Tribune, Bala said: "Baba Peter, who once worked with
the construction firm, died as a result of complications after drinking rat and
mosquito poison. He was rushed to a hospital at Kpakungu where he was confirmed
dead by medical personnel at the hospital."

The Police spokesman stated further that the deceased might have committed
suicide of frustrations, saying "because before his death, he had started withdrawing
from people."

The Nigerian Tribune further gathered that the deceased before his death had, on
different occasions complained about his unpaid salary arrears to his wife and close
friends about his frustrations after years of working for his company.

Further checks revealed that his condition became more worrisome to people around
him sometimes last Wednesday, after he was said to have visited the company
without success to get money for his family's upkeep, after which he was said to
have suddenly become unusually aggressive the following day.

It was further learnt that the late Baba Peter was said to have left a stern
warning that nobody should come near him as he started keeping indoors and to
himself, to the extent that his wife had to inform his best friend, whom he had
equally rebuffed on the ground that, "he was thinking about his existence."

The deceased co-worker was said to have, last Thursday morning, called his wife to
find out where she kept the rat poison they usually used to kill rodents in their home.
Thereafter, the late Baba Peter allegedly called one of his friends to inform him that
he was taking his own life.
The said friend, was said to have quickly make a phone call to the deceased’s wife to
ask if she was at home and with a view to inform her about the last telephone
conversation he had with her husband.

Consequently, the deceased's friend was said to have rushed to the man’s house
only to discover he had drank the poison and laid unconsciously on the floor of his
room.

Baba Peter was thereby rushed to a nearby hospital in the neighbourhood but could
not survive as he was said to have given up the ghost less than one hour after he
was brought to the health centre.
