Lagos-Kano-Abeokuta rail project begins with demolition in Lagos

The construction of the Lagos-Kano-Abeokuta
standard gauge rail track will begin this week Friday.

The multi-billion dollar Lagos-Ibadan rail
project is the first phase of Lagos-Kano
standard gauge rail track that will pass
through Abeokuta in Ogun State.

The rail track is proposed to connect the Apapa
and Tin Can seaports in Lagos to the rail corridor.

Managing director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Fidet Okhiria  asked those whose property encroach
on the right-of-way of the rail corridor to
evacuate them.

Already not less than 2,000 properties had been demolished on Friday in Lagos, including 5 Churches, 3 Mosques and Others.

Okhiria said that "Those that are due for compensation
will be compensated because it is part of the contract.
“But those who encroached on the land have
to leave the premises as soon as possible
because the constructions will begin on
Friday.
“We intentionally did not give permits to so
many people because we know that one day,
the land will be required.

“So we have already mapped out those places
we need to remove and they are aware. We
have told them to remove their valuables before the bulldozers start work,’’ he said.
