WORKERS in the employ of Ogun State have appealed to Governor Ibikunle Amosun,
to pay their salary in gross and not net pay as had been the practice over the years.
This was contained in the address read by the state chairman, Nigeria Labour
Congress, Comrade Akeem Ambali, and his counterpart, in the Trade Union Congress,
Comrade Olubunmi Fajobi, at the year 2016 May Day celebration, held at the MKO
Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, on Sunday.
The theme for this year's is celebration, "The Working Class and the Quest for Socio-
Economic Revival."
Ambali said the state government must improve upon and that such system would no
longer be acceptable to them.
He said, "Labour acknowledges the numerous economic challenges confronting our
dear state. We, however note that since all traders, investors and peasant farmers
rely on the purchasing power of the public servants, the government must improved
upon it payment system.
"Payment of net salary is no longer acceptable to Ogun workers; we prefer our salary
in gross."
The workers described the policy of blocking exit of workers who do not owe
cooperative society as strange and against labour laws.
"Workers who do not owe any cooperative society must as a matter of urgency be
allowed to exit such," the labour leader said.
NLC also appealed for the evaluation of productivity through observation and other
indices of rating, saying “the use of examination is gradually becoming out-
fashioned, exploitative and punitive.
"We urge that we emulate our counterpart, Lagos State, which recently cancelled
such needless bottleneck that has lost touch with modern day realities."
Fajobi, in his address said a sizeable number of the workforce currently received less
than half of their salary monthly.
He said, "Your Excellency, a considerable number of workforce currently received less
than half of their salary (Net) monthly, while the remainder hangs with the
government due to failure to remit as instructed to cooperative societies, creditors
(especially banks and other sundry creditors) as well as safe-keepers among others."
Governor Amosun in his response, said labour leaders failed to acknowledge the
effort of his government as regards workers' welfare.
He attributed the dwindling allocation from the federation account as one of the
challenging confronting not only the state, but other states of the federation.
Amosun promised that his administration would not put the state in debt, by the
time he leaves office in 2019.
