FG gives teachers two-year ultimatum to obtain Certificates

The Minister of State for Education, Professor
Anthony Anwuka has revealed that Federal government has given teachers in the country two year ultimatum to obtain necessary teaching qualifications.
Anwuka said that some teachers
don’t have the basic teaching certificate, which is
not a very good thing.

The Minister who made this known on Monday in
Owerri said that the government remains determined to stop the devaluation of the teaching
profession, which has been an all comers affair over the past years.

His words: “There is an existing law in this country
that mandates the Teachers Registration Council to
ensure that all teachers must possess professional
certificates. It is only in Nigeria that people
teaching in our classrooms do not have the basic
teaching certificate. People teach with subject area
qualification without necessarily shaving the
teaching qualification.”

According to him, the National Universities Council,
NUC, has designed a programme called Post
Doctoral Certificate in Education for teachers which
will add to their skills.
On Nigerian Universities, he advised lecturers to
realize that there has been serious infrastructural
improvements in tertiary institutions, since the
establishment of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund
(TETFUND) by the Federal Government.

He said: “Lecturers battled for this and since it has
been achieved, what they should now do is to shun
all manner of distractions and improve their level
of commitment to their calling,” he noted.
