Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State has assured that his administration is
determined to ensure government presence on Tongeji Island in Ipokia by
providing top notch public infrastructure in the border town.
He gave assurance of his commitment to ensure that Tongeji Island, a community
that closely shares border with the Republic of Benin, country on the West Africa
coast, will not go the way of Bakassi Island in Cross Rivers State which was
annexed by Cameroon some years ago.
Amosun disclosed this on Tuesday when he hosted a delegation from the National
Boundary Commission, NBC, on a courtesy visit toat his office in Oke- Mosan,
Abeokuta.
The governor said his administration will continue to provide good schools,
hospitals and other social amenities in the area.
According to him, “we don’t want to cede any of our territory to any other
country. We will do all that is necessary to ensure that Tongeji Island does not go
the way of Bakassi Island,” Amosun vowed.
The governor also expressed his appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for
directing that the Army, Navy, Police and other security agencies in the country,
immediately establish and maintain presence on the Island.
Amosun also urged the boundary commission to ensure a speedy resolution of
other disputed boundary areas between Ogun and its neighbouring states, which
includes Oyo, Lagos and Ondo states.
In his response, the Director General, National Boundary Commission, NBC, Dr.
Muhammed Bose Ahamad assured the governor of the commitment of the
commission to ensure that all the boundary disputes are resolved.
He also expressed appreciation to the governor for what he described as his
“proactive measures to ensure government presence on Tongeji Island.”
